Toile Fabric
Toile
fabric or Toile de Jouy to call it by its proper name, first
originated in the 18th century in France in Jouy en Josas
near Versailles. Wooden blocks were carved in great detail
with pastoral and rustic scenes of everyday life by highly
skilled craftsmen, which were then printed in only one colour
on a light coloured cotton background.
As times have moved on and tastes have changed Toile fabric
has never gone out of fashion, especially in France where
it is used to decorate the salons and bedrooms of Châteaux’s
to the attic bedrooms of more humble abodes.
Sometimes when using the same design on the wallpaper,
curtains and cushions
the result can be, either over powering or an awkward mess.
However, toile fabric when used in this way looks simply
stunning and timeless. This is probably why toile fabric
has never lost its popularity.
Of course over the years toile fabric has adapted and changed
to take in different themes from those of children playing
and the hunting or mill scenes of 18th century France and
at Lara Grace Collections we have introduced Les Chinoise
toile fabric in red or blue which depicts as the name suggests
intricate scenes of old china.
If you would like a sample of Les Chinoise toile fabric
